THE United States suffers from a different problem, no less serious and deeply implanted in its democratic politics. We have an electorate, pandered to and misled for a generation by politicians of all persuasions, which continues to believe that you can get something for nothing: increasing benefits from the state without the payment of taxes. This is a colossal failure of the collective imagination and one brought about and reinforced by democratic politics. The capacity to dream is one of America’s greatest strengths and in this case also one of its enduring nightmares. For this dream exists as a total disconnect from economic reality. For me the question is not about the learning capacity of democratic capitalism but the different learning capacities of different types of democratic capitalisms in different kinds of crises.
